May Day: Gov. Idris reaffirms commitment to workers’ welfare, vows to address challenges
The Governor of Kebbi State, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of workers, and the protection of their rights and privileges.
Gov. Idris emphasized that workers are invaluable partners in the development of Kebbi State and remain critical stakeholders who cannot be ignored.

He made this known during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Haliru Abdu Stadium, Birnin Kebbi, on Thursday.
Describing the May Day celebration as an important occasion, the Governor commended the workers for their dedication and the remarkable contributions they have made to the state’s progress.

As a fellow worker and unionist, Governor Idris acknowledged the challenges the workers are facing and assured them of his administration’s resolve to address those issues.
“We are committed to protecting your rights and privileges.
” We recognize the vital roles you play across various sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, infrastructure, and security,” he said.

The Governor also appreciated the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for their steadfast advocacy for workers’ welfare, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration to build a brighter future.
He urged the workers to remain dedicated to their duties and continue driving the state’s development.
Gov. Idris used the occasion to highlight his administration’s achievements, which included the implementation of the new national minimum wage, the payment of pensions, gratuities, and death benefits to retirees, and the completion of the ultra-modern Secretariat complex, among others.

Earlier in his remarks, the State Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Murtala Usman, expressed appreciation on behalf of both the NLC and TUC for the Governor’s outstanding attention to workers’ welfare and development.
He commended Gov. Idris for the timely implementation of the new national minimum wage, an action not yet taken by over 20 states in the country.
Comrade Usman lauded the Governor’s continuous support for the workers, describing his presence at the 2025 May Day celebration as expected, given his background as a veteran and top-notch unionist as well as a former labour leader.

He also listed the achievements of the state’s labour unions, including the protection of workers’ rights, constructive engagement with government, inclusive representation, lawful advocacy, and the recognition of workers’ contributions.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of an ‘Award of Excellence’ to Gov. Idris by the Kebbi State chapters of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the National Association of Nurses.

The State NLC leadership also presented awards to distinguished individuals for their contributions to Kebbi State’s development.
