Motorists, farmers laud FERMA over construction of bridges along Argungu- Sokoto road in Kebbi

Some motorists and farmers in Kebbi State, have commended the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) for the construction of bridges and water ways along the Argungu – Sokoto road in Argungu Local Government  of the state.

The agency constructed culverts and drainages along the road which posed untold headship to motorists plying the road and  farming along the road during rainy season.

The motorists and farmers expressed their views in separate interviews on Tuesday in Argungu Local Government of the state.

Alhaji Nasiru Gwadangwaji, a commercial driver, commended FERMA for executing the projects, saying it had been almost impossible to ply the road when it rains.

“Before the construction of the culverts, no driver could ply the road when it rains. Drivers have to alight on the road with their passengers  until it stops raining.

“There was an incident last year when a vehicle with passengers on board were washed away,” he said.

Gwadangwaji, therefore, urged drivers to complement government efforts of preventing road accidents through provision of good roads by avoiding speeding and overloading.

Also, Malam Murtala Argungu, a commercial driver, lauded FERMA for the construction of culverts and drainage long the Argungu- Sokoto road.

“The construction of the culverts  have eased the suffering we face in our vehicular movements from Argungu Local Government to some major towns in Sokoto State, especially during the rainy season.

“We were sometimes thrown in oblivion, thinking that there were no  waterways and drainages along the road, and it would cut off the road by the heavy downpour.

“With the construction of the new culverts and drainages, we are happy, and we are thankful to the Federal Government as well as the FERMA for saving our lives and that of our passengers,” he said.

Argungu urged the motorists to drive safely and abide by the road safety rules and regulations in order to protect lives, property and infrastructure in the area.

On his part, Malam Mode Yahaya, a farmer who farms along the road, commended FERMA for saving their farmlands.

He said,”We could not cultivate our farmlands during the rainy season because it is tantamount to wasting of time, energy and resources.

“Anytime we cultivate our farmlands along the road, the water when it rains  washes away everything. We only cultivate after the rainy season.”

Yahaya thanked the Federal Government and FERMA for constructing the culverts and drainages.

“You can see, we have resumed farming in our farmlands,” he said.

Another farmer, Musa Sanusi, who lauded the FERMA for the projects, urged the state government to use the water for construction of earth dams in the area.

“You can see how the water is moving violently thought the drainage; the state government may use that to construct earth dams for the benefit of farmers and those rearing cattle,” he urged.
