NAFDAC D-G urges collaboration for scientific innovation in Nigeria
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has addressed critical issues surrounding research excellence in Nigeria.
Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director General of NAFDAC, made this known in Abuja on Monday at the opening of a three-day national conference themed “Exploring Excellence in Ethical Conduct, Leadership for Research Integrity Through Empowerment” (EXCEL-RITE).
The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the conference was organised in collaboration with the National Health Research Ethics Committee (NHREC) and the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN).
EXCEL-RITE aims to promote a culture of ethical and transparent research across academia, government, and industry.
Prof. Adeyeye emphasised that the future of Nigeria’s scientific progress depended on a collaborative research culture rooted in integrity, strategic planning, and effective communication.
She highlighted several challenges within Nigeria’s research ecosystem, including limited resources, fragmented funding, and a silo mentality that hampered interdisciplinary collaboration and international partnerships.
“Research must be passion-driven and strategically planned, with clear goals, methodologies, and timelines,” she stated.
She also stressed the importance of robust literature reviews and sound analytical methods in producing credible scientific outcomes.
The NAFDAC D-G called for strong, transparent collaborations across disciplines and institutions, noting that competence, technical contributions, and open communication were essential for successful joint ventures.
She addressed intellectual property issues, urging researchers to understand proprietary rights, patents, and the vital role of legal offices and patent attorneys in protecting innovations.

Adeyeye also underscored the importance of translating research into tangible benefits for industry, healthcare, and trade.
“From bench to bedside, farm to fork, or clinic, applying research effectively can improve lives and fuel national development,” she said.
She further identified adequate funding as a major determinant of successful research, calling for clear financial agreements between collaborators and institutions to ensure research goals were met.
VMT NEWS reports that the first day of the conference concluded with a call for researchers, institutions, and policymakers to move away from isolated approaches.
They were urged to embrace collaborative frameworks that foster integrity, innovation, and measurable impact on Nigeria’s scientific and public health landscape.
