Nasarawa State Governor Extends Condolences Following Deadly Incidents in Benue and Niger States; Swears in New Officials

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, also Chairman of the North Central States Governors Forum, today offered his deepest condolences to the governments and people of Benue and Niger States following recent tragedies resulting in significant loss of life.

The condolences were offered during a ceremony where he swore in one special advisor and 18 development area council administrators.

Governor Sule specifically referenced the devastating flooding in Mokwa, Niger State, which has claimed over 150 lives and displaced over 3,000 people, and a deadly attack in Yelwata, Benue State, resulting in at least 45 deaths.

He expressed his profound sympathy to Governors Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State and Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, and offered prayers for the victims.  He further called for an end to the senseless violence plaguing the border regions of Benue State.

“The people and government of Nasarawa State extend sincere condolences for the unfortunate loss of life in Mokwa, Niger State, and Yelwata, Benue State,” Governor Sule stated.

“We pray for the repose of the souls of the departed and implore God to bring an end to this bloodshed.”

Governor Sule also expressed his gratitude to the Nasarawa State security agencies, particularly Commissioner of Police Shettima Jauro and the heads of other security agencies, for their dedication and proactive measures in protecting the border communities of Keana, Awe, Nasarawa, and Doma, especially during the recent weekend when they held several meetings to address the security concerns.

New Appointments:

In addition to expressing condolences, Governor Sule used the occasion to swear in Hon. Yusuf Loko as Special Adviser on Intergovernmental Affairs.

The Governor cited his commitment to bringing competent individuals into the administration to support the implementation of its policies and programs.

Eighteen new development area council administrators were also sworn in.  Governor Sule charged these appointees to prioritize transparency, accountability, and prudent management of public resources.

He emphasized that they are to work in collaboration with elected local government chairmen, not compete with them, and to actively engage with traditional rulers to foster peace and security within their respective areas.

He explicitly warned against any premature engagement in political activities that could interfere with their official duties.

The Governor stressed the importance of the development area councils in bringing government services closer to the people, particularly in response to the growing population, while reinforcing their role as supportive to, and not competitive with, the elected local government chairmen.
