NASENI and Caverton Helicopters Advance Female STEM Inclusion with UAV Training
Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria – April 9, 2025 – The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and Caverton Helicopters have commenced the second phase of their partnership (NASCAV) by training ten female engineers and scientists from across NASENI in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology.
The six-week program, which began on Monday, April 7th, 2025, at Caverton’s Lagos training facility, is a key component of NASENI’s SHEFLY project. This initiative, spearheaded by Executive Vice Chairman/CEO Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, aims to empower rural women through drone technology for precision agriculture, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking on behalf of NASENI, Dr. Abayomi Okesola, NASCAV Project Lead, highlighted Caverton’s expertise and the importance of the SHEFLY project in promoting women in STEM and bridging the gender gap. He noted the trainees will be instrumental in establishing clusters to train rural women nationwide in drone applications for agriculture.
Captain Bello Ibrahim, MD of Caverton Helicopters, represented by Mr. Ayodele Omueti, Director Corporate Services, emphasized the significance of UAV training for staying current with global technological advancements and urged the trainees to focus on acquiring the necessary knowledge.

Mr. Ese Obukonise, Project Coordinator for CAVERTON Drones, stated the training adheres to UK aviation standards, ensuring international best practices. He emphasized the high global demand for UAV pilots and the SHEFLY project’s role in promoting gender inclusivity and empowering women in this growing field. Upon completion, the trainees will train rural women farmers in utilizing drones to enhance their agricultural output.
The SHEFLY project, set to launch at NASENI’s AAVDI in Kaduna, aims to improve food security, increase crop yields, and boost the income of rural women farmers through precision agriculture and sustainable practices.
