NAWOJ President wants Kebbi Govt. to appoint women into cabinet

The National President of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Mrs Ladi Bala, has urged Kebbi Governor, Nasir Idris to appoint women into his executive council.

Bala made the appeal at the flag-off of a three-day training programme on “Gender Equity and Safety/Gender Sensitive Reporting for Women Journalists” in Birnin Kebbi on Monday.

“We are appealing to the state governor, Nasir Idris, to engage women in his cabinet as women can handle and deal with multi-sectoral issues.

“Women are natural, they give, not take, and if a woman can manage the home front, she certainly can deliver in governance,” she said.

Bala expressed displeasure that out of the 469 members of the National Assembly members in the country, only 13 are women.

“We commend the governor for choosing three NUJ members as his media aides.

“It gladdens our hearts to see competent people in key-related positions, as any government that ignores the role of media is toying with its success,” she said.

Bala commended the state chapter of NAWOJ for ensuring peaceful coexistence in the state council of the union.

Earlier, the Chairperson of NAWOJ in the state, Hajiya Hassana Koko, appreciated the national body of the association for making the state NAWOJ a beneficiary of the training workshop which was being conducted across the geopolitical zones of the country.

“The training workshop could not have come at a better time than now when women journalists are facing daunting challenges in a bid to carry out their lawful and constitutional duties,” she said.

Koko expressed worry that gender inequality had continued to be a global phenomenon with women journalists exposed to serious dangers, molestations and harassment with some losing their lives in the line of duty.

“But the good days are here and we are better enlightened today. The guest speakers will prove me right.

“This training workshop will update our knowledge and prepare us for the tasks ahead.

“Journalists, as members of the fourth estate of the realm, must be fair in their reportage by making balancing of reports their guiding principle.

“Women journalists, in the course of discharging their duties must be guided by safety and precautions as contained in the constitutional provisions of the association and the country,” Koko said.

The chairperson thanked the state government for supporting the association despite the fact that it had just started working.

Declaring the training open, the Head of Service, Alhaji Safiya Bena, assured the union of the state’s sustained support and promotion of gender inclusiveness and equity.

Bena, represented by Malam Abdullahi Maiyama, the Permanent Secretary, Establishment, said the state government would continue to provide conducive and safe environment for working journalists, especially women in the state.
