NCC Launches Major Study to Evaluate Competition in Nigeria’s Telecom Sector
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially appointed a consultant to conduct an extensive study on the current state of competition within the nation’s telecommunications industry.
The move, announced in a statement by Nnenna Ukoha, Head of Public Affairs, aims to provide the regulator with an independent, data-driven assessment of the market. This initiative is being carried out under the legal framework of Section 92 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) and the Competition Practices Regulation (CPR) 2007.
The primary goal of the study is to help the NCC design “proportionate regulatory interventions.” By understanding the depth of market competition, the Commission intends to:
* Safeguard consumer welfare by preventing anti-competitive practices.
* Encourage fresh investment into the sector.
* Support national digital development goals.
* Ensure long-term industry sustainability.

The NCC emphasized that this will not be a closed-door evaluation. The appointed consultant is tasked with engaging a wide spectrum of “critical stakeholders,” ranging from licensed mobile operators to industry associations and consumer advocacy groups.
“Stakeholders will be invited to provide data, submissions, and perspectives to enrich the analysis,” the Commission stated, highlighting its commitment to a transparent and inclusive process.
