 By Yusuf Bukar Biriri.

The North East Development Commission (NEDC)  has installed solar streetlights across various schools, markets, hospitals, media houses, and communities, as part of its ongoing post insurgency recovery efforts towards enhancing public safety, security, and sustainable development of the region.

In furtherance of its mandate to promote recovery and development in the North-East, the Commission, beyond its ongoing construction of schools, roads, bridges, and provision of potable water, has extended its interventions to the installation of solar streetlights across all 17 local government areas of Yobe State to complement the government post insurgency recovery programme.

Some beneficiaries of the recent NEDC  training on solar-powered streetlight installation and maintenance, Mustapha Muhammad Gujba, Bulama Modu and Abubakar Aliyu, also residents of a community that benefited from the Commission’s solar street lights project, said the initiative has been a game-changer for the community, enhancing security and promoting sustainable development.

They highlighted that the initiative covered all the newly constructed Mega and Model Schools by the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni, as well as other tertiary institutions.

The  NEDC solar-powered streetlights initiative has created a safer environment for students and staff. Similarly, the gesture has significantly improved hospitals and healthcare centres’ services, especially during nighttime and emergencies.

The project covers numerous locations and places across Yobe State, including rural and semi-urban communities, business places, and government infrastructure.

The installation of solar streetlights in places like modern markets and media organisations, including Nigeria Television Authority NTA, Yobe Broadcasting Corporation (YBC, Yobe Television YTV,  and Sunshine Radio, has enhanced their daily operations.

Others include newly constructed Mega and Model Schools built under the administration of His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni CON, in Buni Yadi, Damaturu, Geidam, Nguru, Potiskum, and Gashua,  College of Health Technology Nguru,  state Geidam Polytechnic; and the College of Legal Studies, Nguru.

The intervention also covers Specialist Hospitals in Damaturu, Buni Yadi, Geidam, Gashua, Potiskum as well as General Hospitals in Damagum, Nguru and Fika.

Yobe residents commend the NEDC’s team, led by its Managing Director, Mohammed Goni Alkali and the  State Coordinator, Professor Ali Ibrahim Abbas, for their dedication to improving the safety of lives and properties of the good people of the state.

They further applauded the Commission’s robust collaboration with the Yobe state government to promote resilience in achieving the post-insurgency recovery agenda of the federal government.
