NGO calls for domestication of Disability Law in Yobe

A non-governmental organisation, Connected Development (CODE), has urged the Yobe State Government to domesticate the Disability Rights Act.

Alhaji Modu Muazu, the State Support Team Lead for CODE’s ‘Project Trust,’ made the call during a stakeholders’ engagement on Wednesday in Damaturu.

Muazu expressed concern over the delay in passing the Disability Rights Bill into law, despite its first and second readings in 2021.

“We are here to discuss how to ensure that the state government passes this bill into law and implements it effectively.

“People with disabilities face significant accessibility challenges in government and private buildings across the state,” he said.

He added that CODE would continue to advocate for the rights of people with disabilities through public awareness campaigns and engagement with government officials.

Malam Adamu Haruna, the Deputy Director of Legislation at the Yobe State House of Assembly (YSHA), confirmed that the bill had passed its first and second readings and was currently before the state executive council for endorsement.

He expressed optimism that the executive arm of government would take the necessary steps to enact the law.
