NGO calls for immediate action against technology-facilitated GBV
A Non-Governmental Organisation, Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI), has called on all relevant stakeholders to take immediate action against technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV).
BBYDI Communications Director, Sanni Alausa-Issa, made the call in a statement on Monday following the recent brutal murder and dismemberment of Hafsoh Lawal in Ilorin by a friend she met on social media.
Technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) refers to any form of gender-based violence that is facilitated or exacerbated through the use of technology, such as the internet, mobile phones, social media, and other digital platforms.
Alausa-Issa described the horrific incident as highlighting a disturbing trend where technology is weaponised to perpetrate gender-based violence.
He noted that the anonymity and reach of digital platforms have emboldened perpetrators, leading to a surge in crimes infiltrating homes, workplaces, and educational institutions.
He called on law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to investigate and prosecute those involved in Hafsoh’s tragic death.
Alausa-Issa also urged social media platforms to implement stronger measures to detect and prevent misuse for predatory activities, ensuring user safety.

He further urged policymakers to enact and enforce comprehensive legislation that addressed the evolving nature of TFGBV, while also encouraging civil society organisations to amplify awareness campaigns promoting digital literacy and caution in online interactions.
Additionally, Alausa-Issa called on community leaders to challenge harmful cultural practices contributing to gender-based violence and foster environments that respect equity for all individuals.
BBYDI condemned the act unequivocally and expressed condolences to the victim’s family.
The organisation reiterated its commitment to advocating for the rights and safety of young people, especially women and girls, in both digital and physical spaces.
