Niger Mining Disaster: Senate Calls for Enhanced Regulations and Security Measures

156

In response to the recent mining disaster in Niger State, the Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to implement stringent safety measures and regulations to prevent future industrial hazards. Additionally, the Senate urged the deployment of adequate security forces to mining sites and surrounding communities to prevent attacks by gunmen.

This resolution followed a motion presented by Senator Musa Mohammed Sani (APC, Niger East) concerning a tragic rockslide that buried over 50 miners at a gold mining site in Farin Doki, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State. The motion, debated during Thursday’s plenary session, highlighted the urgent need for improved safety protocols and security at mining locations.

The Senate also appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant government bodies to mobilize resources for the recovery of the victims’ remains. This call underscores the importance of immediate and effective disaster response to mitigate the impact on affected communities.

Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) and Senator Mohammed Monguno (Borno North) supported the motion, emphasizing the need for the Federal Government to prioritize the safety and security of the mining industry. They argued that ensuring robust regulatory and security measures would protect miners and deter illegal activities that jeopardize both lives and the nation’s resources.

Presiding over the plenary in the absence of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin stressed the necessity for the government to enhance the regulation of the solid minerals sector. He acknowledged ongoing efforts but highlighted the persistent issues of illegal mining and resource exploitation without due contributions to government revenues.

“This motion underscores the need for the government to strengthen the regulation of the solid mineral sector,” Jibrin stated. “We must address the problem of illegal miners exploiting our resources without paying their dues to the government. It is crucial for all stakeholders, including the Senate, to ensure that our solid minerals sector operates in line with international best practices. Revenues due to the government must be properly collected and accounted for.”

In addition to advocating for stricter regulations and enhanced security, the Senate directed its Committee on Solid Minerals to visit the accident site. The committee’s task is to investigate the cause of the tragedy and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.

The rockslide incident in Farin Doki has drawn significant attention to the safety and regulatory challenges facing Nigeria’s mining industry. The Senate’s resolution aims to address these issues comprehensively, ensuring the protection of miners and the proper management of the nation’s mineral resources.

As Nigeria continues to develop its mining sector, the Senate’s call for action highlights the critical need for a coordinated approach involving all relevant stakeholders. By implementing robust safety measures, enforcing regulations, and ensuring adequate security, the government can create a safer and more sustainable mining industry.

The tragedy in Niger State serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with mining and the urgent need for effective governance to safeguard lives and resources. The Senate’s proactive stance is a step towards achieving these goals and preventing future disasters.
