Nigeria at 65: Farmers seek govt’s intervention to enhance productivity

Farmers in Kano State have called on government to subsidise agricultural inputs and address other challenges hindering their productivity.

The farmers made the appeal in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday as the country marks its 65th Independence Anniversary.

Alhaji Shamsuddeen Abubakar, a rice farmer in Gwale Local Government Area, noted that food security is crucial to socio-economic development, adding that the country has vast lands to produce food for local consumption and export.

Also, Alhaji Abubakar Isa, a farmer in Tauroni, said equipping farmers with modern farming tools would help tackle insecurity.

Another farmer, Haladu Mohammed, in Nasarawa Local Government Area, emphasised the need for economic diversification beyond oil, exploring areas like agriculture, mining, and tourism.

A maize farmer in Gwale Local Government Area, Alhaji Ado Japanese, appealed to the Federal Government to provide soft loans to support farmers throughout the farming season.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Haruna Musa of Yankaba, urged the Federal Government to address security challenges hindering farmers’ productivity, noting that kidnapping and other threats pose a great risk to agricultural production in rural areas.

Musa said that ensuring a secure farming environment would enable farmers to produce assorted food crops, boosting food security and the economy.
