Nightmare As Asaba-Onitsha Expressway Collapses

The Federal Expressway connecting Asaba, the Delta State capital, to its neighbouring Onitsha in Anambra State and other South Eastern states, has collapsed and became a nightmare to commuters.

The corridor of the expressway, between the old immigration office, shortly before the defunct Toll-Gate of the Asaba end of the River Niger Bridge, has completely failed.

The potholes that were causing gridlock for motorists by Bonsaac/Ezenei Junction, along the expressway, have spilled over to the Timber Market in the area.

Less-privileged children and teenagers now see it as a business opportunity as they defile the deep mud on daily basis, directing vehicles and trucks on how to navigate through the Jemok Junction axis of the expressway.

Residents around the failed portion now buy nylon bags to tie to their legs so they could wade through the stagnant muddy waters. A traveller from Lagos, who simply identified herself as Madam Oyinyechi, said she was robbed by three dreaded-looking young men two days ago when rain fell and her Toyota Camry car got trapped at the scene.

“I decided to sleep in the car because it was late and there was nowhere for me to go. I thought it was safe for me to do because I saw owners of other trapped cars also resigning to fate in their cars,” she lamented.

“Travellers now pray ahead of their journey against rainfall, or check into hotels in Asaba, anytime it rains, to escape being trapped and made to sleep on the highway.”

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has been paying attention to riverine and urban roads of the state, despite the outcry of residents and road-users that are using the corridor.
