Northern Democrats Chart Course for 2027 Elections, Threaten Civil Action

Abuja, Nigeria – The League of Northern Democrats (LND) concluded a meeting on Thursday, May 22nd, 2025, at the Nicon Luxury Hotel in Abuja, outlining plans to significantly impact the 2027 general elections and challenge the current political landscape.

The meeting, attended by 147 members and chaired by Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, resulted in a ten-point resolution.

The LND formally approved its constitution and minutes from previous meetings, with instructions to finalize the group’s official registration as an association.

The leadership structure, a detailed list of which was released separately, was also approved.

A key focus of the meeting was the group’s political strategy.  The LND pledged support for the National Opposition Coalition Group, led by Senator President David Mark, in navigating the pre-election period.

Furthermore, the group is actively exploring two key paths: the formation of a new political party to attract members disillusioned with larger parties, or a merger with an existing party as a secondary option.  The preference is to establish a new party to better accommodate these independent-minded politicians.

Beyond electoral politics, the LND expressed deep concern about the state of the North, specifically highlighting endemic poverty, insecurity, unemployment, and a widespread economic crisis.

The group plans to convene a larger meeting of Northern groups to consolidate regional political positions, building upon discussions held at a recent Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) meeting in Kaduna.

The LND plans a concerted effort to pressure the National Assembly (NASS) to uphold constitutional provisions, specifically targeting the status of legislators from Delta and Kebbi states who switched political parties.

The group is prepared to mobilize Nigerians in acts of civil resistance to force NASS to declare these seats vacant, as mandated by the constitution.

Finally, the LND intends to engage the 19 Northern governors on their perceived inaction regarding the worsening situation in the region, attributing the issues to ineffective governance at the state and local levels.

The communiqué was jointly signed by Senator Ibrahim Shekarau (Chairman) and Dr. Umar Ardo (Convener).  The LND’s actions promise to inject significant energy into the already dynamic Nigerian political scene ahead of the 2027 elections.
