The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has defended Senator Ali Ndume’s right to criticize President Bola Tinubu’s administration, opposing efforts by the Coalition of North-East Elders Forum to silence him.
The Chief Whip of the Senate, Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South), recently claimed that President Tinubu was unaware of the realities outside the Presidential Villa, alleging that certain forces had isolated the President. In response, the Coalition of North-East Elders Forum criticized Ndume, warning him to cease his attacks on the President or risk losing the 2027 election.
However, the AYCF condemned the Coalition’s actions, accusing them of trying to suppress Ndume’s freedom of expression, which is protected by both national and international laws. In a statement released in Kaduna on Monday, AYCF President-General Yerima Shettima emphasized that Senator Ndume’s views must be respected and not suppressed.
“The attack from CNEF against Senator Ndume is vindictive, unwarranted, and an unacceptable affront to democratic principles of freedom and fair play. It is a brutal encroachment on his right to freedom of expression, safeguarded by various international treaties and conventions to which Nigeria is a signatory,” Shettima stated.
Shettima also expressed concern over rumors that Senator Ndume might be removed from his position as Chief Whip of the Senate. He warned that any further attempts to violate Ndume’s right to hold differing views would be strongly resisted.
“Any government that cannot be criticized is a liability,” Shettima declared, urging the North-East elders to stop their attacks on Senator Ndume. He clarified that while the AYCF does not support protests, the lawmaker’s comments on the current hardships in the country are valid and should be considered by the government.
Shettima urged the government to heed Ndume’s observations, as they reflect the concerns of many Nigerians facing difficulties. He also warned the North-East elders against politicizing security issues for their own gain.
“The observations raised by Senator Ndume should be heeded by the government, as they reflect the collective concerns of many Nigerians facing hardships,” he added.
The AYCF’s defense of Senator Ndume underscores the importance of upholding democratic principles and ensuring that elected officials can freely express their views without fear of retribution.
