NSCDC sets up committee to investigate allege N1m extortion by its staff in Kebbi

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) says it has set up a five- man – committee to investigate alleged N1 million extortion by its staff in Kebbi State.

The Commandant of the corps in the state, Alhaji Suleman Ibrahim, made this known while briefing newsmen on the alleged incident in Birnin Kebbi on Monday.

He said, ” I have read a report online that my officers had been alleged to have extorted money from a client.

“This has never been the tradition of the Nigerian security and civil defense corps in the state as one of our core values is serving with integrity, honesty and diligence.

” I am not a party to such incident and I am not aware of it, and I doubt if any of my officer would do such an illegal and unlawful act but still we take any allegation serious to its logical conclusion hence a five- man committee has been set up by the command to investigation the extortion.”

Ibrahim vowed that anyone found wanting of committing the extortion would be dealt with accordingly.

Earlier while speaking with newsmen, an Automated Gas oil (AGO) Distributor, Mr Jimoh Abdulmumin, who is a staff of Chidi Global Oil and Gas, Abuja, had sought the immediate
intervention of the Commandant- General of the NSCDC over alleged extortion of money by the officers of the
command in the state.

Abdulmumin, alleged that the some officers of the command had arrested him and the driver of his truck when they were distributing their product to
their customers in Jega town a week ago.

“A week ago, some operative of civil defense led by one Yarima Magaji arrested me and my truck loaded with AGO, which was pure and
legitimate backing with relevant documents.

“But they claimed that the
product was adulterated and papers were fake.

“They kept me in their cell at their headquarters, in Birnin Kebbi for three
days. When they continued to threaten us of continue detentions, we started
negotiating from N200,000 but Yarima insisted that he would not collect
less than a million for us to be released because the state commandant too
will have a share from it.

“After pressure from him, my boss asked me to call one of our customer
in Jega to come over over to plead to him and Yarima refused to let us go.

“He vowed that his commandant would be given the money; and since our goods and truck were still lavishing at the Eid- ground in Birnin Kebbi, we decided to
give them what they wanted so that our business would not suffer.

“I asked an attendant at the hotel, where I lodged at Jega LGA to bring the
money in cash for me because Yarima refused to accept transfer of the
money.

“The boy brought the money in cash to him, he collected it and arrested the boy again. We had to pay N10,000 before he allowed the boy to go.

“He also forced me to speak in a video that he and his officers did not
collect any money from us before he gave us the key of the truck which I
did.

“But now, Yarima is not letting us be doing our legitimate business in
Kebbi as he said that we must be giving him N70,000 any time we come to Kebbi
to do our business.

“That is why, we are seeking the intervention of the
Commandant- General of Civil Defense in this case and the relevant stakeholders on this matter,” Abdulmumin narrated.
