Police detain 23 suspected cultists, recover arms, ammunition

The Police Command in Lagos State has detained 23 suspected cultists in different parts of the state in the last two weeks.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Moshood Jimoh, confirmed this to newsmen at the command’s headquarters, Ikeja, while displaying the firearms recovered from them.

He said that many of the suspects were found in possession of dangerous weapons, arms and ammunition including fabricated toy guns.

“The use of toy guns to instill fear or rob citizens constitutes a serious criminal offense punishable by law, ” he said.

According to him, a notorious cultist known as “Aka,” found in possession of five AK-47 rifles, is among the apprehended suspects.

“More than 10 families have come forward to identify him as the individual responsible for the murder of their relatives.

“Investigations are nearly completed and the suspect, along with anyone found to be aiding him will face full prosecution, ” he said.

The commissioner said that the command had established and deployed anti-cultism squads across all 14 area commands to tackle cultism aggressively.

He said that the command was fully prepared to respond to threats and ensure that criminals either flee the state or face the full weight of the law.

“Lagos is not a safe haven for criminals, it is either you relocate or face the full weight of the law, ” Jimoh warned.

He commended Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun and Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for the provision of state-of-the-art crime-fighting equipment and technology that have enhanced policing efficiency in the state.

He appreciated members of the public for their timely intelligence reports which had contributed significantly to the successes.

The commissioner reassured Lagos residents and visitors that the state remains safe and that the command would continue to work tirelessly to maintain peace and protect lives and property.

“Under my leadership, violent crimes have been reduced to the barest minimum, ” he said.
