Political Shift: El-Rufai Resigns from APC, Joins SDP
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing a divergence from the party’s founding principles. In a statement released today, March 10, 2025, El-Rufai expressed his disillusionment with the current direction of the APC, stating that the party has strayed from its original vision.
“As a founding member of the APC, I held onto the hope that our shared values would endure,” El-Rufai stated. “However, recent developments have confirmed that the party’s current leadership has no desire to address the unhealthy state of affairs.”
El-Rufai emphasized his efforts to raise concerns both privately and publicly, but concluded that a change of political platform was necessary to pursue his progressive ideals. He highlighted his contributions to the APC’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, and his record of implementing progressive policies during his tenure as governor of Kaduna State.
“My eight years in Kaduna were dedicated to advancing human development, expanding infrastructure, and promoting equality,” he said. “These accomplishments, however, seem to hold little value in the current APC, which has marginalized its members.”

Effective immediately, El-Rufai has submitted his resignation letter to his ward in Kaduna. Following consultations with mentors, colleagues, and supporters, he has joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
“I have decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and adopt it as the platform for our future political engagements and activities,” El-Rufai announced.
As a member of the SDP, El-Rufai intends to engage with other opposition leaders and parties to form a unified democratic front to challenge the APC in upcoming elections. He called on his supporters and concerned citizens to join him in the SDP.
“I therefore call on all our supporters and other persons concerned about our country’s future to join us in the SDP in the journey towards making Nigeria flourish as a beacon of pride for Africans and the Black Race.”
