Protest : Police say no under-age detained in Yobe

The Police Command in Yobe said it did not detain any minor in connection with Aug. 1 protests against hardship in some parts of the state.

DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the command’s Spokesman, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu on Tuesday.

NAN reports that the police on Aug 4, said it arrested 108 suspects allegedly involved in violent protests in Potiskum, Gashua and Nguru towns.

Abdulkarim, however, said 40 minors among the protesters were immediately released, while the adults were charged to court.

“68 of the protesters were charged with civil disturbances and related crimes to courts of competent jurisdiction.

“They were convicted for the offences, but subsequently granted pardon by the state government,” he said.

The spokesman said parents and guardians of the convicts were warned by the police to ensure that such unlawful acts did not repeat themselves.
