Protesters, police injured in outbreak of violence in Georgia

The Interior Ministry in Tbilisi reported on Monday that demonstrators and police officers were injured in an outbreak of violence in Georgia amid fierce election disputes and ties with the European Union.

The ministry reported that 21 police officers had been injured by stones, fireworks, bottles, and iron bars, bringing the total injured over recent days to 113 officers.

No figures were initially available on the number of injured demonstrators.

According to media reports, police used water cannon and teargas, while protesters erected barricades.

On Sunday, President Salome Zourabichvili called for fresh parliamentary elections in response to widespread allegations of electoral fraud.

The ruling Georgian Dream party was declared the winner of the polls at the end of October.

However, the opposition has not recognized the results, and opposition lawmakers refused to accept their mandates. (dpa/NAN)
