Regional Development Ministry to revitalise education in North-east
The Minister of State for Regional Development, Mr Uba Ahmadu on Tuesday reassured his ministry’s readiness to revitalise education sector in the North-east
Ahmadu made this known during his three-day facility tour of intervention related projects being constructed by the North Eeast Development Commission (NEDC) in Maiduguri.
The minister said education remained one of the ministry’s top priorities in the region while addressing 400 students, mostly orphans at the Command Science Secondary School (Boys) Auno, Maiduguri.
Ahmadu said educational institutions in the region would continue to receive adequate support to improve infrastructure and other facilities.
“Education is key to what we are doing at the Ministry of Regional Development,” he said.
The minister insisted that education of children remained key in the fight against insurgency.
“When you take out the education component you will easily find the reasons for the insurgency in the first place.
“Part of measures already adopted by the NEDC is the complete sponsorship of over 400 students who are orphans,” Ahmadu said.
He said his ministry through NEDC would intensify efforts toward improving the lives of the people in the region in order to avert the reoccurrence of insurgency.
The minister emphasised the need for the stakeholders in the region to also pay attention to education of the orphans, especially in communities affected by insurgency.
Ahmadu, while inspecting some of the ongoing NEDC’s intervention projects at the Borno State University (BOSU), also assured his Ministry’s support to the institution.
“I want to assure you that the Ministry of Regional Development through the NEDC will continue to partner with Universities and other educational institutions like yours to make sure that we put in place structures that will be sustainable and add value to the work you do,” the minister said.
He, however, encouraged the management of BOSU to seek for more funding through private donors and organisations in addressing the University’s infrastructure deficit.

The 22.5km road project currently being constructed by NEDC falls under Phase 1, covering Ngowom- Koshebe and Ngowom – Dusman – Zabarmari – Gongulong – Khaddarmari communities.
Ahmadu said when completed, the new road was expected to stimulate economic activities, enhance security and facilitate smooth movement of goods and services.
NAN also reports that the 2rd Phase of the road project was divided into three segments.
The first segment of 10.5km covered (Galameri) Ngowom – Koshebe, the second segment of 3.5km covered Ngowom – Dusman while the third segment of 8.5km covered Gongulon-ZabarmariKhaddamari responsibility.
