Researcher advocates innovative approach to learning AI

Mr Cornelius Adejoro, a Nigerian US-based researcher, has advocated a simple approach to learning  Artificial Intelligence (AI), using pen, paper and imagination to expose the logic behind machine learning.

Adejoro, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lokoja, that the approach, which he termed “AI by Hand,” as an innovation that breaks down complex AI concept into tangible hands-on activities.

He said it would assist young learners to understand how decisions are made and empower them to navigate the AI-driven world.

Adejoro emphasised that by leveraging everyday tools, children could explore AI’s underlying logic and decision-making processes.

“This method fosters a deeper understanding of AI, encouraging kids to think creatively about its applications and implications.

“Hands-on activities help kids understand how AI works, demystifying the “black box” of AI. This approach fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical awareness, essential for real AI literacy.

“AI by Hand” makes AI education accessible to all, bridging digital divides in low-resource environments,” he said.

The researcher further said that by introducing kids to AI concepts in an engaging and accessible way, “AI by Hand” empowers them to shape the future of AI.

He said: “Educators and researchers have found that this approach not only builds understanding, but sparks excitement.

“This approach helps children understand that AI isn’t magic, but rather mathematics, logic, and human decisions encoded in algorithms.

“A child that can draw it, can understand it, and with this understanding, they can shape the future of AI with curiosity, confidence, and care”.
