Rivers monarchs pass vote of confidence on Fubara, urge Tinubu to intervene in state crisis

The Rivers State Traditional Rulers’ Council (RSTRC) has expressed strong support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, passing a vote of confidence on his leadership.

The council also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the escalating political crisis in the state.

During an extraordinary meeting held on October 8, 2024, the council, led by its chairman, His Majesty Eze Chike Worlu Wodo, reviewed recent events in the state and resolved to show solidarity with the governor. Speaking after the council’s visit to Fubara, Eze Wodo, the Eze Oha Apara IV of Apara Kingdom, emphasized the need to maintain peace amidst the growing political tension in Rivers.

The council expressed appreciation for the government’s investment in security, highlighting the improved functionality of the police and other security apparatuses.

They also commended Governor Fubara for his handling of the political unrest surrounding the October 5, 2024 local government elections, which were conducted peacefully despite security challenges.

In their statement, the council declared: “We pass a vote of confidence on His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, for his leadership and commitment to the peace and prosperity of Rivers State. We will continue to support the governor in all his policies and programs throughout his tenure.”

The monarchs urged President Tinubu to intervene, ensuring that neither his actions nor those of his associates exacerbate the ongoing political crisis in the state. They appealed to all political actors to lay down their grievances for the sake of unity and peace.

Responding to the council’s visit, Governor Fubara expressed gratitude for the continued support of the traditional rulers. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to respecting the traditional institution in Rivers and pledged to avoid any actions that could undermine their authority.

Fubara also praised the peaceful conduct of the recent local government elections, attributing the success to divine intervention. Additionally, he announced the approval of official vehicles for the monarchs, directing the Secretary to the State Government to ensure a smooth distribution of either the vehicles or cash alternatives, based on the needs of the recipients.

“Your visit today reassures me that we have the backing of Rivers people. You, the traditional rulers, represent the heart of our communities, and we are committed to upholding and respecting your esteemed positions,” Fubara stated.
