Sokoto Establish Eco Club In AGILE Project Schools

BY ANKELI EMMANUEL, Sokoto

The World Bank funded Adolescent Girls Initiative For Learning And Empowerment (AGILE) in collaboration with Sokoto  State Government has  began, “Training Of Trainers For The Establishment Of Eco-Club In AGILE Project Schools in Sokoto State”.

In his welcome address, Sokoto state commissioner of environment, Shehu Tangaza decried that issue of climate change should not be taken lightly, hence it’s responsible for majority of the challenges we fave today.

“Challenges such as insecurity, flood and unbearable temperature are all evidence of climate change.

Collaborating the commissioners position, the Director Planning, Sokoto state Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, Malam Musa Adamu said tree planting campaign will cover all the junior and senior secondary schools in Sokoto.

Lending his voice in a good will message,  State AGILE Project Director, Dr Mansur Isa Buhari said environment is the most important tool to human existence, hence without it there would not have been life.

Dr Mansur who noted that, there are natural disasters, however submitted that majority of the disaster faced by human today is as a result human activities.

“”Let’s try to keep safe environment as the safety of our environment determines to a greater extent a healthy life””.

The vibrant scholar, Dr Buhari also appealed to all and sundry to strive towards becoming ambassadors of tree planting to safeguard the environment and eco system.

On how the eco- club will be sustained, Dr Buhari said, “”These clubs will also pass down the knowledge to other members of their community and members of their school with the guide of the people that will take care of these eco clubs at school level. And some of these may include discouraging indiscriminate felling of trees, encouraging planting of trees””.

Buhari who justified the reason for starting the tree planting which includes ornamental, economic, medicinal, commercial, nutritional and eco club at a time most people will say it’s dry season said it was to encourage people to develop more love for the environment by caring for the trees themselves and not nature.

“People are saying we should have started our tree planting campaign in the schools during the rainy season so that the trees can survive. But that is a very wrong notion as far as I am concerned.

“”Because if you want to encourage people to love and care for the environment, and you want nature to take care of the trees they are going to plant, then you are not promoting any kind of love for environment. But with this, we will make them develop live for the environment and make a living from it as well.

“‘We will plant our trees during dry or armature season, so that these children will be taught how to take care of these trees. They will nurture them to grow to become whatever they want to become. So if you plant during rainy season and just say that you will allow the rain to fall and take care of the trees, then you are not teaching these children anything””.

Before declaring the training open, the Commissioner of Education, Muhammed Tukur Alkali represented by the  Executive Secretary, Female Education in the ministry, Professor Mustapha Namaka

said the step is very encouraging especially now that the negative consequences of climate change is visible for all to see.

The commissioner who maintained that the state governor, Ahmed Aliyu has deep passion and commitment to the issue of climate change mitigation, added that, the governor demonstrated the feat when he gave his first counterpart funding to the AGILE Project and L-PRES.
