Sokoto Govt. streamlines healthcare to strengthen safe motherhood
The Sokoto State Government has streamlined donor interventions on immunisation, family planning, reproductive health, and other healthcare services to strengthen safe motherhood across the state.
The Executive Secretary of the Sokoto State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (SSHCDA), Dr Larai Tambuwal, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Sokoto.
Tambuwal commended all stakeholders for their achievements, stressing that Gov. Ahmad Aliyu had released N30 million for the establishment of a dedicated family planning fund and budget line.
She said the fund was part of the government’s commitment to sustaining the provision of family planning commodities and services in the state.
According to her, the effort encompasses maternal health and supports the current Family Planning initiative, as well as the Last Mile distribution infrastructure, recognising the social, economic, and developmental challenges faced by the state.
She highlighted that the state government also created a Family Planning Technical Working Group that would continue to guide the coordination of stakeholders.
“It was a significant step toward advancing family planning initiatives after the joint unveiling of the National Guidelines for State-Funded Procurement of Family Planning Commodities last year,” Tambuwal said.
The Executive Secretary noted that this would enable the health and development benefits of family planning to be accessible at the state level.
She explained that the investment would ensure the continuous availability of contraceptives, enabling individuals and families to make informed choices about their reproductive health.
“This milestone aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen supply chain systems, enhance service delivery, raise awareness, and improve health outcomes across the state,” she added.
She commended The Challenge Initiative (TCI) for its overwhelming support in commemorating Safe Motherhood Day 2025 themed, “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.”
She said TCI supported Nigerians in celebrating a quiet but powerful revolution safeguarding the lives of mothers and children and ensuring increased access to family planning (FP) and childbirth spacing services across the country.
“This collaborative effort sets the stage for a more robust and accessible family planning framework in Sokoto state, aiming to positively impact the health and well-being of its residents,” she said.
She thanked all stakeholders working tirelessly to advance access to quality reproductive health services in Sokoto state, urging them to sustain these efforts to make a difference in society.

The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that TCI inaugurated in 2017 to transition the gains of NURHI into a platform that empowers state governments to take ownership.
The effort aimed to scale up proven interventions and drive impact across more states, expanding to include both urban and underserved rural areas.
According to a statement by Dr Taiwo Johnson, Country Team Lead, TCI Nigeria, the proven model puts local governments in the driver’s seat to sustainably scale reproductive health solutions.
Johnson added that, in partnership with more than a dozen state governments, TCI was making motherhood safer, families healthier, and futures brighter.
“Safe motherhood starts before the first contraction; it begins with informed choices, timely access to family planning, and a community that supports women at every step of their reproductive journey,” Johnson said.
