Sule urges corps members to embrace skill acquisition training

Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa has urged the 1,115 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to the State to embrace the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) training during their orientation course.

Sule stated this at the inauguration  ceremony of the 2023 Batch B Stream I Orientation Course held at Magaji Dan-Yamusa NYSC Permanent Orientation camp in Keffi Local Government on Friday.

Sule represented by Mr Alphonsus Mai-Keffi, Permanent Secretary, State Ministry for Special Duties, Legal Matters and Youth Affairs, said showing interest and participating in SAED training would go a long way in tackling  unemployment.

He, therefore, urged them to take the training seriously to achieve the set goal of earning skills to become self-employed and entrepreneurs.

The governor also urged the corps to pay attention and participate in all other programmes of the orientation course, deliberately packaged to make them realise their potentials and meet the expectations of the scheme.

“It is in the light of this that I enjoin you to pay attention to the lectures on salient national topics and on the NYSC scheme that you will receive.

“I am also aware you would undergo training on the SAED programme. Therefore, I urged you to take the SAED training seriously,” he said.

Sule then assured the corps members of his government’s statutory responsibility to their welfare, security and general well-being.

“Nasarawa state is peaceful and you will come to see it as a home away from home. Let me reiterate that your security is guaranteed,” he added.

Speaking earlier, Alhaji Abdullahi Jikamahi, State Coordinator of NYSC, congratulated the corps members for successfully completing their final examinations which qualified them to be called up for national service.

Jikamahi represented by Mr Olabode Felix, NYSC Camp Director for the 2023 Batch B Stream I orientation course, urged the corps members to take the training seriously as it will determine their level of success in the service year.

“The scheme has put several parameters in place to measure your performance during the service year as the scheme will not hesitate in meting out appropriate punishment on erring corps members.

“In a few days, you will be witnessing the inauguration of the camp court, which will try and punish erring corps members in accordance with the laws.

“I, therefore, charge you to shun all social vices ranging from cultism, consumption of illicit drugs, immoral acts among others,” he said.

Jikamahi revealed that a total of 1,115 corps members have been duly registered.

He assured the corps that the scheme had carefully selected resourceful trainers to train them on different skills that would enable them to become self-reliant due to the paucity of white collar jobs.

“I urge you to choose a skill and be 100 per cent committed to it,” he said.

Jikamahi appreciated the support of the state government to the scheme under the leadership of Gov. Abdullahi Sule and also reminded him of the scheme’s appeal for the construction of a befitting 3,000 capacity Multipurpose Hall for lectures and hosting of programmes.

The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that NYSC Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed was in attendance to observe the proceedings.
