Super Falcons’ Olympic Hopes Dwindle After 1-0 Loss to Spain

167

The Super Falcons of Nigeria faced a tough defeat on Sunday evening, losing 1-0 to Spain in their Group C match at the ongoing Paris 2024 Women’s Olympic Football tournament in France.

The decisive moment came in the 85th minute when Spain’s Alexia Putellas scored a stunning direct free kick that caught Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Nnadozie, off guard. This victory secures Spain’s place in the quarterfinals with one group match remaining against Brazil on Wednesday.

Despite creating several opportunities, the Super Falcons struggled to find the back of the net. Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade missed a crucial one-on-one chance that could have turned the tide for Nigeria.

This defeat leaves the Super Falcons at the bottom of Group C with zero points, following their earlier 1-0 loss to Brazil. Their upcoming match against Japan on Wednesday is now a must-win, though their chances of advancing to the next stage are slim.
