TETFund Inaugurates Advisory Committee to Equip Multipurpose Laboratories Nationwide

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) today officially inaugurated an Advisory Committee tasked with the crucial responsibility of equipping six multipurpose laboratories across key Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The move signifies TETFund’s commitment to bolstering research infrastructure and fostering innovation within the nation’s academic landscape.

Arc. Sonny S. T. Echono, Executive Secretary of TETFund, emphasized the pivotal role of research and development in driving economic growth and addressing societal challenges.

He highlighted that the establishment of these advanced laboratories is a direct response to a comprehensive survey that revealed significant gaps in existing research facilities, including outdated equipment, duplication, and underutilization.

These new facilities are intended to provide state-of-the-art resources, thereby enhancing the capacity of Nigerian researchers to compete on a global scale.

The six selected beneficiary institutions include the University of Lagos, the University of Port Harcourt, the University of Abuja, Bayero University Kano, the University of Nigeria Nsukka, and the University of Maiduguri.

The committee’s mandate, which is to be completed within one month, includes reviewing existing equipment lists, identifying high-quality and cost-effective Procurements, recommending phased acquisition of equipment, and advising on effective management frameworks for the laboratories.

This initiative is funded through TETFund’s Intervention Budgets for 2023, 2024, and 2025, underscoring a sustained investment in research infrastructure.

The formation of this expert advisory committee is seen as a vital step in ensuring that the equipping process aligns with international best practices and ultimately leads to the efficient operationalization and long-term sustainability of these critical research hubs.
