TETFund Launches Initiative to Solve Power Crisis in Tertiary Institutions

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced a new program designed to combat the persistent power outages plaguing Nigeria’s universities and colleges.

Aminu Masari, Chairman of TETFund’s Board of Trustees, unveiled the “Alternative Energy Solution Initiative” in Abuja, inaugurating a steering committee to guide the project.

He emphasized that the initiative reflects TETFund’s dedication to supporting the government’s efforts to ensure consistent power supply within the nation’s tertiary education sector.

Masari, former Governor of Katsina State, highlighted the critical role of reliable electricity in fostering effective learning and research, a resource currently lacking in many institutions.

He cited the rising costs of electricity tariffs, among other challenges, as contributing factors to the current power crisis.

TETFund anticipates that providing stable power will significantly enhance the quality of education and research conducted in these institutions.

This initiative complements the Federal Government’s existing efforts, spearheaded by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), to supply steady power to tertiary institutions.

The REA is currently implementing plans to install solar hybrid power plants at 15 federal tertiary institutions and two teaching hospitals, aiming to expand electricity access for underserved populations.

While a precise completion date for the REA’s project remains undisclosed, the agency has demonstrated progress in expanding electricity access, having deployed over 67 mini-grids and 995,396 solar home systems.

The newly formed TETFund steering committee has been tasked with submitting a preliminary report within two months. They will play a key role in the subsequent implementation of the Alternative Energy Solution Initiative.
