Three of the four House of Assembly members elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State have defected, along with their supporters, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement was made during the APC’s flag-off campaign for the Local Government Elections in Koko Besse Local Government Area on Saturday.
Rt. Hon. Usman Yankwai, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, announced the defections, citing the effective leadership and performance of Governor Nasir Idris as the primary reasons. He highlighted that the lawmakers representing Argungu, Bunza, and Yauri constituencies decided to join the APC in support of Governor Idris’s vision for Kebbi’s development and progress.
“This decision by the assembly members to support Governor Idris’s mission and vision for the development and progress of Kebbi and its people is a testament to his able leadership,” said Yankwai.
At the campaign rally, Alhaji Abubakar Kana Zuru, state chairman of the APC, welcomed the defectors and their supporters, assuring them of the party’s support and fairness. He emphasized that Governor Idris’s efforts to develop the state within a year were aimed at transforming the lives of the people of Kebbi.
Minister of Budget and Economic Planning and former state governor, Atiku Bagudu, expressed his satisfaction with the achievements of Governor Idris’s administration over the past year. “The only thing we can do to repay him is to support the party’s policies and programmes,” he stated.
Saidu Dakingari, former governor and Director General of the APC’s campaign committee for the last governorship election, urged the electorate to vote en masse for the APC in the upcoming local government elections. He commended Governor Idris for delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Kebbi State.
Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, also expressed his excitement about the progress made under the APC-led administration. “Let us rally around and support him for the progress and development of our state and its people,” he urged.
Governor Idris, addressing the crowd at the rally, expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support. “I’m overwhelmed by the huge crowd at this campaign rally. I want you to vote for the APC in the local government elections. I assure you of my administration’s commitment towards promoting the economic development of the state and unity of its people,” he said.
The defections mark a significant shift in the political landscape of Kebbi State, with the APC strengthening its position ahead of the local government elections.
