 By Yusuf Bukar Biriri.

The Ya Zarah Orphan Care Foundation, Potiskum, on 27th December 2025, successfully organised its 7th Annual Qur’anic Musabaqa (recitation competition) Walima, drawing Islamic scholars, government officials, traditional title holders, and community leaders from across Yobe State and beyond.

The event, which marked another milestone in the foundation’s commitment to Islamic education and child welfare, showcased the intellectual and moral development of orphans and vulnerable children under its care.

The foundation was established by Engr. Abubakar D. Aliyu (Jarman Potiskum), a former Deputy Governor of Yobe State and minister of power as a humanitarian initiative dedicated to nurturing orphans through education, religious instruction, and social support. At the Walima, the founder was represented by Dr Muhammad Sani Idriss, Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Almajiri Commission.

In his address, Dr Idriss highlighted the vision behind the establishment of the Ya Zarah Orphan Care Foundation, noting that the annual Musabaqa is designed to promote deep attachment to the Qur’an, discipline, moral uprightness, and self-confidence among the children. He emphasised that investing in Qur’anic education is a strategic way of shaping responsible citizens who will positively contribute to society, addressing the challenges faced by orphans and vulnerable children in the region.

Dr. Sani Idriss further acknowledged the sustained support of government, religious leaders, and philanthropists, stressing that such collaboration remains critical to the success and sustainability of faith-based humanitarian initiatives.

The Walima was attended by several prominent personalities, including Alhaji Yusuf Umar, Commissioner, Yobe State Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ethical Re-Orientation, and Kaigama of Pataskum; Alhaji Aliyu Saleh Bagarai, former Deputy Governor of Yobe State and Madaki of Tikau; and Malam Goni Isah Auta, Chief Imam of the Pataskum Emirate, among other dignitaries.

In their goodwill messages, they commended the management of Ya Zarah Orphan Care Foundation for its consistency in organising the Musabaqa over the years, describing the initiative as a powerful tool for preserving Islamic values and empowering young learners. They urged parents, community leaders, and stakeholders to continue supporting similar programmes that combine religious education with social responsibility.

The high point of the Walima was the presentation of gifts and prizes to winners across various categories of the Qur’anic competition. The awards, which ranged from educational materials to other incentives, were aimed at encouraging excellence, healthy competition, and sustained commitment to Qur’anic memorisation and recitation.

Participants and guests expressed satisfaction with the level of organisation and the quality of recitations displayed by the contestants, reaffirming the foundation’s growing reputation as a centre for moral and educational development in Yobe State.

The Ya Zarah Orphan Care Foundation continues to play a significant role in supporting orphans and promoting Qur’anic education, with the annual Musabaqa Walima standing as a testament to its enduring mission and impact within the community.
