Yobe Govt expands logistics for hunters to support military operations

The Yobe Government has expanded infrastructure and logistical support for local hunters and vigilantes to strengthen military operations against insurgency in frontline local government areas.

The Security Adviser to Gov. Mai Mala Buni, retired Brig.-Gen. Dahiru Abdussalam, said this while inaugurating renovated accommodation and a conference hall for the group in Damaturu.

Abdussalam said the initiative is part of a broader security strategy to combat Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists, especially in forest areas

He said that the facility, previously a dilapidated two-bedroom apartment occupied on rental basis, was remodelled into a 30-room structure to improve operational readiness.

He said each room could accommodate between six and eight personnel, raising the camp’s capacity to over 100 members at a time.

According to him, the expansion is designed to provide a stable base for the hunters who operate under the operational command and control of the Nigerian Army in volatile areas.

He explained that in relatively stable locations, the group works under the supervision of the Nigeria Police Force.

“Hunters are integral to ongoing military operations. They conduct patrols, man ambush positions and participate in confidence-building patrols,” Abdussalam said.

He added that a conference hall with about 30-seat capacity was constructed within the facility to serve as an operations and coordination centre.

The adviser said the state government had also strengthened the group’s logistics with uniforms, kits, weapons, ammunition, vehicles and motorcycles to ensure rapid deployment.

“They can mobilise within 15 minutes and respond swiftly to distress calls. Their mobility and knowledge of the terrain complement military efforts,” he said.

Abdussalam said members are enroled in the Yobe Contributory Healthcare Management Agency scheme to guarantee access to medical care.

He added that the government provides monthly stipends, feeding support and special operation allowances to sustain morale.

According to him, families of members killed in action receive support, while injured personnel are treated and given compensation.

He urged residents to cooperate with the hunters and other security agencies, noting that sustained peace in the state was the result of coordinated efforts.

Also speaking, the Commander of Yobe Hunters Group, Idrissa Buba, commended the government for strengthening the group’s operational base.

Buba appealed for the provision of a borehole and a mosque within the facility to address welfare needs of members.

He assured that the group would continue to support military operations and safeguard communities across the state.
