The Yobe State Ministry of Livestock Development, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD), has flagged off a vaccination campaign against Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), targeting 2,500 cattle across the state.
The campaign was officially launched at Kasaisa community in Damaturu by the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Mukhtar Idi Maiha, who was represented by the Director of Animal Health and Reproductive Services, Dr Alao Mitchell.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Dr Mitchell emphasized that the vaccination campaign is a strategic and proactive intervention aimed at safeguarding rural livelihoods and strengthening the national animal health system. He noted that transboundary animal diseases such as CBPP pose persistent threats to sustainable livestock development, pastoral livelihoods, and market opportunities for cattle farmers.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to boost productivity, reduce disease burden, and promote economic prosperity across communities. He stressed that the success of the campaign depends on strict adherence to vaccination protocols.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Director of Veterinary Services in Yobe State, Dr Usman Ali Umar, expressed optimism over the giant strides of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in championing the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development to advance livestock health, productivity, and national food security.
He welcomed the federal team and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to sustained collaboration and future vaccination exercises to protect Nigeria’s cattle population.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Livestock Development, Dr Idriss Yusuf Madaki, represented by the Pilot Programme Manager, Dr Bulama Yaro Geidam, highlighted the significance of the vaccination exercise and observed that Yobe State has an estimated cattle population of over 10 million heads, noting that the 2,500 cattle targeted in the current campaign represent only a small fraction of the state’s needs, and called for expanded vaccination coverage in subsequent exercises.
In their goodwill messages, the Chairman of the Alhaya Shuwa Arab Cattle Breeders and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) commended both the Federal and Yobe State governments for the initiative. They also appealed for additional support, including the provision of water points, feed mills, and other essential infrastructure to enhance livestock production in the state.
