Yobe Govt. introduces procurement cadre in civil service

The Yobe Government says it has introduced a new procurement cadre of 150 officers to enhance financial management in the state civil service.

Alhaji Tonga Betara, the state Head of Service (HoS), said this at a two-day workshop on “Building a Sustainable Procurement Cadre for Effective Service Delivery” in Damaturu on Wednesday.

Betara said that the introduction of the new cadre was part of the state’s drive toward prudent management of public resources.

“The creation of the procurement cadre in the civil service is part of the ongoing reforms being undertaken by Gov. Mai Mala Buni’s administration to provide maximum results to the people within the scope of our limited resources.

“I wish to stress that each participant in this workshop and indeed the entire civil servants have a key role to play in promoting good governance in the state.

“This is achievable with adherence to due process and also upholding accountability, transparency and prudent management of public funds,” he said.

Betara said the workshop was also to prepare the officers for the onerous task of blocking leakages, over-invoicing and other irregularities in conducting financial transactions at Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA’s).

“It is our hope that at the end this workshop, participants would be well equipped with the rudiments of public financial management and procurement processes.

“Subsequently, their inputs in their respective organisations are expected to induce substantial savings that could enable the government undertake other meaningful projects for improving the wellbeing of the entire Yobe citizenry,” Betara said.

He charged the workshop’s resource persons to make good presentation with clear illustrations for easy comprehension by the participants.

In his remarks, Alhaji Shuaibu Amshi, the Permanent Secretary, Establishment, expressed optimism that the new procurement cadre would enhance financial management in the state civil service.

He commended Betara for introducing several programmes aimed at equipping civil servants with modern techniques and concepts for effective service delivery.

Amshi congratulated the participants for being the first set of the cadre and charged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by living above board.
