Yobe Govt set June 6 2026 for LG election.

Yobe State Government is set to conduct Local Government elections on 6th June, 2026, Mohammed Grema Nguru, the Permanent Member 1 of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) revealed this to journalist in Damaturu.

He stated this while addressing stakeholders in a meeting dedicated to preparing for the elections of chairmen and councilors in the state’s 17 Local Government councils.
Nguru announced that the Executive Governor of Yobe State, His Excellency Dr. Mai Mala Buni, has officially approved the elections to be held on June 6, 2026 respectively.
According to him, the commission is keen on engaging the support of media professionals to effectively disseminate crucial information to the electorate across the state.
Emphasizing the role of security agencies, Nguru called for their collaboration to ensure safety at polling units and requested guidance on areas that may require additional security measures to prevent potential issues may arise.
According to him, the political parties will receive election guidelines aimed at ensuring they nominate candidates who have integrity and competence. “I have confidence in you, the stakeholders, that we will all work together to achieve the desired outcome obviously.”
The member reiterated that the State Independent Electoral Commission is committed to organizing, overseeing and conducting free, fair, credible and peaceful elections, stressing the importance of cooperation for election day.

Obviously the eligibility for candidacy has been outlined, requiring all Yobians to be at least 25 years old for councilorship and 30 for chairmanship, with no gender bias. Additionally, candidates must be residents of their local communities, and are not bankrupt, and possess a minimum educational qualification of a school certificate or its equivalent paper.
According to him the candidates will also need to undergo security screening, with fees of N300,000, N250,000, and N200,000 for chairmen, vice chairmen, and councilors, respectively, to obtain nomination forms as usual.
In conclusion, the meeting resolved with a call to action for all stakeholders to ensure engagement and support, setting the stage for a historic electoral process in Yobe State at large.
