The Damagum Divisional Police Headquarters swiftly responded to a fatal motor accident at Damagum Town, involving a trailer truck with registration number MUS 791 XH, driven by Aliyu Muhammad of Azare town travelling from Damaturu to Lagos.

A statement from the police public relations officer, Yobe state command, Dungus Abdulkarim, revealed that on reaching Damagum town, the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a Mitsubishi Canter in motion ahead of him, with eighteen occupants, bearing registration number AA 641 PKM, driven by Usman Muhammad of Yaskawel Village.

The statement indicates that following the incident, several passengers sustained various degrees of injuries, while one Dahiru Maikudi of Yaskawel was medically examined and certified dead at the General Hospital, Damagum.

According to the statement, six victims of the accident were referred to a teaching hospital in Damaturu for further medical attention.

The statement added that in reaction to the incident, angry youths protested what they described as incessant accidents on the highway, which have claimed many lives.

Damagum, being the headquarters of Fune local government, is experiencing heavy human and market activities on Sundays and Wednesdays, necessitating frequent pedestrian movements close to the highway, thereby contributing to persistent accidents, the statement added.

The statement added that swift Police intervention had dispersed the crowd to prevent criminal elements from taking advantage of the situation.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, commiserates with the family of the deceased and sympathises with the injured.

He has directed the Divisional Police Officer to collaborate with the Local Government authorities to develop a durable solution to prevent future occurrences.

The CP further calls on motorists to obey traffic regulations and avoid speeding and drive with caution when approaching towns or busy locations, warning that anyone found violating traffic laws will be held accountable and decisively prosecuted.

He also urged members of the public to avoid conducting market activities close to the highway to reduce the risk of accidents.
