Yobe SOLID project engages ministry of environment, YOSEPA on partnership

… Discussion centered on waste to wealth opportunities under Buni’s urban renewal policy.

The Yobe State Solutions for Internally Displaced and Host Communities (SOLID) Project has held a strategic engagement with the Yobe State Ministry of Environment and the Yobe State Environmental Protection Agency (YOSEPA) to strengthen collaboration on sustainable waste management interventions among others in the state.

Speaking during the meeting, the State Project Coordinator, Suleiman Dauda appreciated the Honourable Commissioner for his leadership and the ongoing environmental initiatives across the state.

In a statement made available to newsmen by the communication officer of the project Ali Musa Yawale said the PC stated that the purpose of the engagement was to formally introduce the SOLID Project to the Ministry and YOSEPA, seek institutional collaboration, and present SOLID’s proposed technical support for assessing and designing an integrated waste management system.

He explained that SOLID is a World Bank–supported project, focused on climate-resilient infrastructure, livelihood development, and institutional strengthening.

Mr. Dauda noted that rapid urbanization and the influx of internally displaced persons have significantly increased waste generation in urban centres, while existing systems continue to face gaps in collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal-contributing to flooding, blocked drains, and public health risks.

As part of the proposed partnership, the SOLID Project will work closely with the Ministry of Environment and YOSEPA to assess the current waste management system and design a scalable, sustainable, and integrated waste management system for Damaturu and Gujba Local Government Areas.

He further highlighted complementary SOLID actions, including the one-time lifting of accumulated solid waste in Damaturu, aimed at improving environmental conditions and public health.

The PC further said, SOLID project will ensure the Ministry of Environment and YOSEPA play their respective roles as implementing partners, with emphasis on capacity strengthening, institutional ownership, and long-term sustainability beyond the lifespan of the SOLID Project and thanked the Honourable Commissioner for his leadership and commitment to environmental sustainability.

In his response, the Commissioner for Environment, Hon Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa, welcomed the SOLID team and expressed the Ministry’s readiness to partner with the Project.

Karasuwa affirmed the Ministry’s support for the proposed collaboration on waste management especially waste infrastructure in Damaturu and other major towns noting that waste is increasingly being recycled for economic gains, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability and livelihood opportunities in the state.

The meeting marked an important step toward deepening institutional collaboration for cleaner, safer, and more resilient urban environments in Yobe State.
