Yobe State Creates Council to Tackle Erosion, Climate Change

Yobe State has taken a bold step towards addressing environmental challenges by inaugurating the Erosion Control and Climate Change (YECCC) council.

The initiative aims to combat carbon emissions, manage erosion, and address long-standing environmental degradation in the state.

Governor Mai Mala Buni, while inaugurating the council in Damaturu, emphasised the need for urgent action to tackle these issues, which have affected the state for over two decades.

The council is chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Baba Malam Wali, and includes commissioners from relevant ministries and experts in erosion control and environmental conservation.

The governor outlined the council’s mandate, which includes formulating climate change policies, conducting research and assessments, and implementing targeted initiatives to curb environmental degradation.

The team will also seek climate financing opportunities, enhance capacity building, and explore carbon market strategies while engaging with the public and ensuring monitoring and evaluation processes are in place.

“This development is a significant step in addressing climate change, erosion and other environmental degradation affecting the state for over two decades,” Governor Buni stated during the inauguration ceremony. He expressed optimism that the council would bring sustainable solutions to these pressing problems.

Part of the council’s focus will be on mitigating desertification, particularly in local government areas where it poses a significant threat.

Governor Buni encouraged all stakeholders to collaborate and support the council’s efforts to achieve a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
