Yobe State’s Educational Renaissance: Overcoming Challenges Through Investment and Innovation

By Hannatu Lot

Yobe State, despite significant historical challenges including insurgency and underdevelopment, is experiencing a remarkable educational renaissance under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni. The administration’s commitment to education as a cornerstone of recovery and development is evident in substantial investments and innovative programs.

A central initiative is the Recovery Through Education and Scholarships (RETES) framework.  A key component of RETES is the Buni Foreign Scholarships Scheme (BFSS), which has sent hundreds of Yobe State students to prestigious international universities to pursue studies in fields like medicine, engineering, and technology.

Thousands more students benefit from domestic scholarships and other programs designed to equip them with advanced skills. This strategic investment aims to address the state’s skilled manpower shortage, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare and engineering, and is viewed as crucial for Yobe’s long-term socio-economic growth.

In 2024 alone, over N2 billion was invested in learning materials and infrastructure development.  However, challenges persist.  The legacy of underdevelopment in primary education remains a significant hurdle, with a high number of out-of-school children and inadequate resources in many existing schools, despite recent infrastructure improvements and the distribution of new learning materials.

To address this, the state government is actively pursuing public-private partnerships to expand educational opportunities and resources.

Despite facing misinformation about the state of its education system, Yobe State’s dedication to improving education is unwavering.  This commitment has garnered national recognition. The Federal Ministry of Education, in a special letter signed by Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa, commended Yobe State for excelling in basic education delivery, specifically noting the state’s full access to its 2024 Universal Basic Education matching grant.

This commendation was further amplified by the exceptional achievement of three Yobe State girls – Nafisa Abdullah, Rukayya Muhammad Fema, and Khadija Kashim – who emerged as world champions at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals in London, competing against 20,000 participants from 69 countries.

Governor Buni viewed the Federal Ministry’s commendation and the girls’ international success as significant motivators to further enhance educational standards in the state.

He expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, including teachers and parents, for their unwavering support of the government’s education policies and programs.  The ongoing investment in education is seen as a vital, long-term investment in Yobe State’s future.
