Yuletide: FG begins massive renovation of roads in Bauchi
The Federal Government, through the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), has commenced renovation of some major federal roads in Bauchi State, ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Mr Nanpan Joroh, the Federal Road Maintenance Engineer of FERMA in Bauchi State, made this known in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday.
He said that the Federal Government is concerned about safety of lives, especially during the yuletide, hence the renovation and rehabilitation of major roads.
The engineer said “we are now in December and FERMA has commenced massive maintenance and patching of potholes on major roads in Bauchi State.
“We call this programme ‘Operation Connect to your Destination.
“We want road users to reach their destinations safely during this yuletide and return safely as well.
“The programme started last week and our men are on the roads, working day and night to see that people travelled to their destinations safely during this festive period.”
Joroh highlighted some of the roads being renovated under the programme to include the Bauchi-Tafawa Balewa to Plateau, which covers 21 kilometres and the Bauchi-Kari to Yobe road, which is 30.9 kilometres.
He added that there are four other major road contracts under the 2024 budget which the Federal Government gave approval for their complete renovation.
These, he said, include the 20.2 kilometre Azare-Misau road, the Bauchi-Jos road, the Bauchi-Gombe road and the Kari-Yana in Jigawa.
He explained that the contractor handling the Azare-Misau road had commenced work and would complete in the next one week.

“The contractors for the other three roads will soon report and mobilise to site.
“If all the contracts and direct labour works are executed, the federal roads in Bauchi State will be motorable and people will travel safely to their destinations.”
The site engineer, however, identified insecurity as one of the major challenges, as workers sometimes had to work through the night.
He, however, expressed gratitude to the security agencies who always provide coverage and protection when invited.
Joroh also commended the resolve of Gov. Bala Mohammed to partner FERMA to overcome the road challenges and for allocating a land to the agency as permanent site.
