Zamfara CP seeks Emir’s support for community policing.
The Commissioner of Police in Zamfara State, Mr Abutu Yaro, on Wednesday appealed to traditional rulers in the state to support the community policing initiative to tackle security challenges in the state.
Yaro who was at the Emir’s palace in Gummi, Gummi LGA said that the visit was part of strategies by the police command to enlist the support of traditional rulers and other security stakeholders in the state on the initiative.
He said that as part of the state government’s peace and reconciliation process, fulani herdsmen would also be engaged as special constables to strengthen peaceful coexistence in local communities.
The police commissioner appealed to fulani leaders in the state to allow their children to participate in the programme.
“The essence of our coming to this palace is to meet with security stakeholders in Gummi LGA, especially the traditional rulers.
“We are determined to ensure effective security transformation in the state and we acknowledge the effort of this emirate in the fight against insecurity”, he added.
The police commissioner cautioned people of the state against backing the outlawed Yansakai local vigilantes, stressing that the group has been banned by the government.

“The Yansakai remain banned, we don’t need their services anymore, we will not allow people to be taking the law into their hands”, Yaro stressed.
He appealed to unrepentant bandits to embrace peace, saying that security agencies will ensure peace in the state at all cost.
“I am appealing to the those who refused to lay down their arms to do so in order to promote peace in the state”, Yaro added.
Responding, the Emir of Gummi, assured continued support of the emirate to the ongoing peace process in the state.
Hassan, who was represented by the Senior District Head of Gummi, Alhaji Abubakar Gamo said the area is currently enjoying relative peace and stability.
“We are witnessing peace and stability following the peace process initiated by the state government.
“We are going to continue with dialogue meetings and consultations with all stakeholders to maintain peace in this area”, the emir said.
Also, the Sole Administrator, Gummi LGA, Ibrahim Ibrahim assured the council’s continued support to the ongoing peace process in the state.
Ibrahim said the council would continue to collaborate with security agencies to protect lives and properties of the people.
