Zamfara First Lady sensitizes students on menstrual hygiene management
The Zamfara First Lady Hajiya Aisha Bello Matawalle has sensitised students on menstrual hygiene management in the state.
This is contained in a statement issued in Gusau on Wednesday by the press secretary to the governor’s wife, Zainab Shu’aibu Abdullahi.
She organised an awareness creation event for female students at the Government Girls Day Secondary School, Samaru, Gusau to celebrate World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2021.
The Menstrual Hygiene Day was initiated by the German non-profit WASH United in 2013.

It was initiated to engage decision makers and individuals on a campaign to break the silence, raise awareness and change negative social norms around Menstrual Health and Hygiene, at a global level.
The governor’s wife who was represented at the event by the special adviser to the governor in her office, Hajiya Fatimah Musa, said the exercise is part of the commitments to support girls with knowledge on menstrual hygiene.
She stressed on the need for every woman and girl to be empowered to manage her menstruation safely, hygienically, with confidence and without shame.
“The theme of this year’s menstrual hygiene day is focused on “Action and Investment in Menstrual Hygiene and Health’’.
“The theme seeks to educate girls on understanding their cycle, while also highlighting solutions that address challenges girls and women worldwide face due to menstruation’’, she said.
Matawalle called on all stakeholders to come together and put a stop to persisting taboos and stigma, which undermines the educational opportunities, health and overall social status of women and girls around the world.
Presenting a lecture at the event, Matron Larai Ka’oje enlightened the students on proper hygienic menstrual management in order to avoid infections that may lead to serious health complications in the reproductive system.
According to her, maintaining proper menstrual hygiene is vital to the health, well-being, mobility, and productivity of women and girls while also practicing the COVID-19 stay safe measures.
In a closing remark, the principal of the School, Hajiya Kulu Shehu thanked the governor’s wife for the gesture aimed at supporting the girls with sanitary pads and health talks to help them undergo their periods conveniently.
During the event, sanitary pads and the 28 days white and red bracelets which symbolizes the total menstrual cycle were distributed to the female students.
