2023 Election: Police Will Identify, Arrest Politicians, Foot Soldiers Causing Trouble In Sokoto–CP

As the general elections draws closer, the police in Sokoto state has been urged to not only identify, but also arrest and ensure the prosecution of political actors and their foot soldiers plotting to farment troubles before, during and after the elections.

Giving the charge Thursday in a press conference after holden meeting with Area Commanders, DPOs and Heads of Police formations in Sokoto, the Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Gumel added that they are committed to a peaceful, secure and free and credible elections. 

“In respect to the incessant attacks on INEC faculties and other key and vulnerable government assets, Area Commanders, DPOs Tactical Teams are hereby warned to ensure the emplacement of firm actions that will deter attacks on INEC facilities in the state and across the LGAs/AORs, especially at this crucial season of electioneering in the country”.

Towards achieving that, CP Gumel said, “”You are all henceforth advised to put machineries in motion that will in most proactive manner identify, isolate, apprehend ad bring to deserved justice any political actor and their foot soldiers who may be planning to engage in any form of political violence at political rallies, during the casting of votes and after the conclusion of the electoral process”, CP Gumel advised.

While expressing optimism that no amount of internal security threat in any part of the State will impact on their determination for a peaceful electoral processes in the forthcoming general elections, CP Gumel appealed for sustained collaboration amongst the various security agencies to help create peaceful atmosphere for the elections. 

“As you are aware, some emerging crimes are threatening national security and could undermine our efforts towards entrenching a peaceful electioneering process, if not adequately curtailed”.

Giving examples of such obnoxious acts, CP Gumel mentioned banditry, terrorism, and thurggery which he affirmed that often have political undertones, adding, “and in most cases, the consequences constitutes major security threat to our democracy.
