2023: Group collaborate with INEC to tackle vote buying in Taraba

The Dephee Peace and Community Development Initiative DPCDI, in collaboration with Project Victory Call Initiative PVC, is collaborating with the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to tackle the menace of vote buying ahead of the 2023 general elections in Taraba state.

Mr Bulus Audu Daniel, Executive Director of DPCDI and state coordinator of PVC who led a match to the state office of the INEC said that the aim was to sensitize the people on the need to secure their future by voting credible candidates at the forthcoming elections devoid of unhealthy sentiments.

Daniel said that though the Electoral Act has made it difficult for people to easily manipulate elections as was the case in the past, the pervasive poverty in the state was a major threat and many people may be tempted to sell their votes for temporary gains.

He said it was important for the people to be enlightened about the dangers of selling their votes and to also enlighten the major political actors that they can objectively win the people’s hearts through issue based campaigns rather than stockpiling money to buy votes at elections.

Mr Marvin Bandawa, the public affairs officer at INEC who received the group  on behalf of the state Director commended them for the initiative and assured of INEC support in the campaign.

Bandawa noted that if only the players would play the game by the rules, the work of INEC would be relatively easier and the courts would also have litigations to contend with after elections.

He urged the people especially the youth to stand up for what is right and insist that elections hold and the people’s votes count as the desperate politicians would have no choice but to work hard for the people if they know that no amount of money brandied around can make the people vote the wrong people into offices.
