Along the Onitsha-Asaba bridgehead an unidentified female lost her life and two others sustained injuries when an articulated vehicle careened into pedestrians. The calamity struck on Thursday, attributed to a malfunction in the vehicle’s braking system.
According to an eyewitness, the harrowing sequence of events transpired as the driver descended the River Niger bridge en route to Asaba. With brakes failing, the driver struggled to maintain control, ultimately colliding with unsuspecting pedestrians along the roadside.
Confirming the grim occurrence, C.A. Iyiegbuniwe, the Staff Officer for Public Education at the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra, released a statement detailing the incident.
“The crash, transpiring on April 4th, 2024, at approximately 3:20 in the morning, involved an articulated Mercedes Benz vehicle adorned in white and green, bearing registration number NKE25LG.
“Tragically, the collision claimed the life of one female pedestrian while inflicting injuries upon two others. Responding swiftly, FRSC personnel transported the injured parties to Toronto Hospital in Onitsha, while the deceased was transferred to Toronto Mortuary for further procedures”, FRSC has said.
Expressing condolences, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, Sector Commander RS5.3 Awka, extended sympathies to the bereaved families. He also emphasized the imperative for motorists to prioritize regular vehicle maintenance and strict adherence to traffic regulations to avert such tragedies in the future.
