Green Advocacy unveils manual, seeks transitional justice

Prof. Mala Mustapha, the Executive Director, Green Advocacy for Conflict Prevention and Resilience Building (GACRB), has unveiled a new manual on the need for justice in reconciliation.

The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the manual titled “Sulhu Sai Da Adalci” (meaning reconciliation requires justice in hausa) was unveiled on Thursday in Maiduguri.

Mustapha said the objective is to promote sustainable peace by advancing the localisation of transitional justice initiatives in societies affected by protracted conflicts across West Africa.

He announced that the first 100 cohorts of community stakeholders would be trained in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe in the coming weeks.

“The second cohorts of 60 select participants will be trained under an MoU with Centre for Peace, Development and Diplomatic Studies (CPDDS), University of Maiduguri, by running a 6-month certification course on transitional justice,” Mustapha said.

According to him, at the end of the programme, the beneficiaries would be deployed to nine selected communities across the three states for a step-down training.

He said that in the next two years of the  project implementation, the organisation hoped to facilitate a sustainable transitional justice engagement and leave behind a legacy of transformative restorative justice initiatives in the North-east.

“The expected impact of the manual was to strengthen the knowledge capacity and skills of beneficiaries to become community-based peace interlocutors, contribute to the body of knowledge on localisation and community ownership of transitional justice process and enhance long-term sustainability of our engagements.”

According to him, the current mass surrender of insurgents undergoing deradicalisation, rehabilitation and reintegration necessitated the need for facilitating local level dialogue and reconciliation leveraging on ‘Sulhu’ (reconciliation).

Earlier, Prof. Adam Ajiri, the manual reviewer, said that the manual was articulated in two parts and 10 modules with part one focusing on the importance of justice for reconciliation and sustainable peace.

He said that the module one of the part one of the manual explained the background and context that inform the GACRB’s programme for transitional justice to complement the efforts of the Borno government.

Ajiri said that modules two, three and four, explained key concepts of reconciliation, its strong connection with justice, present relevant Qur’anic verses relating to peaceful resolution of conflicts, and process of using transitional justice as requirement for reconciliation and reintegration.

VMT NEWS reports that GACRB is a non-profit organisation, and a Think Tank established in 2021 with a commitment of promoting restorative justice by fostering social cohesion in societies divided by armed conflicts across the West African sub-region.
