In their resolve towards strengthening rural water infrastructure, the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in collaboration with the Bakhita Initiative JDPC and funding from the Latter-day Saints Charities (LDSC) has commissioned a solarized borehole in Sabon Gari, Achida ward of Wurno local government, Sokoto state.
The interventions according to CRS would no doubt significantly improve access to safe water, thus minimizing the risk of waterborne diseases.
Speaking at the event, CRS Deputy Country Representative, Mr. Dane Fredenburg, said they are working to compliment each in striving to meet the needs of people as much as possible.
“”It’s really important that we’re being seen together, working together, so whether we’re doing nutrition or water or food security, that our activities complement one another, and we work hand in hand and don’t duplicate and make sure we reach the most number of people possible””.
Talking to the benefiting community, Mr Dane appealed to them to
take the responsibility of caring for the facility so that it can serve them for longer period of time without getting spoilt.
“”Your grandchildren can benefit from this water, but it needs to be taken care of, and watched over and protected. if it needs to be repaired, we can work together to repair it, but I think because it’s solar, it really doesn’t rely on a lot of other inputs and can last for many many years'”. Mr Dane noted.
Earlier in his appreciation remarks, the District Head of Achida Umar Abubakar Aliyu said they are indeed pleased with the CRS, and the Bakhita Initiative for the project, adding they lack words enough to thank them because beyond provision of water, they have on several occasions provided foodstuff to their communities.
On his part, the Executive Director of JDPC Sokoto, Mr Williams Daloegoet who is also the Project Coordinator of Kyautata Rayuwa said it an upgrade and conversion of motorized borehole pump to a solar powered system under the Kyautata Rayuwa Emergency Nutrition and Wash Response implemented by Catholic Relief Services in partnership with Bakhita JDPC Initiative to assist vulnerable populations.

“It’s another milestone in our mission to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable populations. The Kyautata Rayuwa project included reticulated water points at all borehole sites, which distributed water to multiple locations within each community, reducing congestion and wait times. The use of solar energy aligned with the project’s sustainability goals, reducing dependency on fuel or electricity””, Mr Williams affirmed.
It will be recalled that, the Catholic Relief Services (CRS), in collaboration with The Bakhita Initiative (JDPC Sokoto), and with funding from Latter-day Saints Charities (LDSC), had successfully commissioned solarized borehole systems in Margariya, Gidan Dari in Wurno local government and Gidan Shifkau, (Wamakko LGA) and rehabilitated another one in Barkaje village of Wamakko local government area, Sokoto state.
