NGO distributes relief materials, cash to 1,550 displaced households in Benue

A non-governmental organisation, Plan International, has distributed relief materials to 1,550 households in Katsina-Ala/Ukum/Logo Federal Constituency.

The Project Manager, Plan International Maiduguri Sub-office, Ms Lillian Sunday, flagged off the distribution of the items on Thursday in Katsina-Ala, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area.

Sunday said that the gesture was for persons displaced by violent attacks in the area.

The project manager said that the emergency humanitarian assistance to conflict-affected displaced persons was funded by START NETWORK and ActionAid.

She said 400 households would benefit from dignity kit items, 500 would benefit from household items, and 650 would receive a N75,000 one-off token cash transfer.

She listed items distributed to include kettles, torchlights, blankets, pots, soaps, jerrycans and mats as non-food, while the dignity kits, sanitary pads, wrappers, towels, pants, slippers and soaps.

“It does not matter whether you are an indigene of Katsina-Ala or not; once we identify that you are a displaced person, you are entitled to the materials.

“We could not go beyond Katsina-Ala because of our safety. This is a 45-day project which we were mandated to carry out,” he said.

Sunday decried the absence of IDP camps that made it difficult for them to identify real victims with ease.

The Chairman of Katsina-Ala LGA, Mr Justine Shaku, described Katsina-Ala as the gateway to the food basket of the nation.

“We are a dignified and peaceful people, but it is unfortunate that the crisis has displaced many of our people.

“For more than 10 years we have been faced with this insecurity, but we thank the governor for supporting security agencies to flush out the terrorists.

“Hitherto, nine council wards out of 12 were under siege, but under the governor and my watch, we have reclaimed seven, though in the others, it is sparsely populated.

“We also appreciate President Bola Tinubu, who recently deployed mobile police to the area.

“They are working in conjunction with the state security outfit Anyam Nyor, and I believe in no distant time, total peace will return to the area,”he said.

A 27-year-old beneficiary, Mrs Eunice Sue told newsmen that she lost her husband to a bandit attack in 2020 and now fends for herself and her two kids.

Sue thanked Plan International for the kind gesture.
