Agency bans farming in open spaces across Bauchi metropolis

The Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) has banned farming activities in open spaces within Bauchi metropolis and other urban cities across the state.

The Agency’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Yahaya Waziri, disclosed this during an interview with newsmen on Tuesday in Bauchi.

Waziri said the ban was part of BASEPA’s renewed commitment to ensuring a clean, safe and healthy environment for all residents of Bauchi.

The PRO stated that the practice not only disrupted the city’s master plan but also contributed to environmental degradation, flooding, and the spread of pests and diseases.

He explained that farming along roadsides and within designated open spaces posed significant threats to public safety, obstructed drainage systems, and diminished the aesthetic appeal of the urban landscape.

“Residents are strongly advised to desist from cultivating crops or carrying out any form of farming on road setbacks, road medians, green areas, and other open spaces meant for beautification and urban development,” he said.

Waziri said that the agency would begin rigorous monitoring to enforce compliance with the directive.

“Anyone found violating this prohibition will face appropriate sanctions in line with existing environmental laws and regulations in the state,” the PRO warned.

He, however, appealed to the public to support BASEPA’s efforts by complying with the directive and reporting defaulters.

He urged community leaders, neighbourhood associations and relevant stakeholders to help sensitise residents on the importance of maintaining designated green areas for urban development.

Waziri said that a collective commitment to proper environmental practices would foster a healthier and more attractive living space for all residents.

He reiterated the Agency’s resolve to protect the environment for present and future generations.
