Adamawa: Persons with special needs advocate inclusion in public schools
The association of persons with special needs in Adamawa has advocated for inclusion in education programmes across public schools in the state.
Ms Patience Briston, the state Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the association made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Yola.
Briston said the inclusion would make it easier for the government to achieve its goal in providing quality education for all and address the challenge of Out-of -School Children.
According to her, the inclusion will also reduce the problem of segregation, discrimination and stigma being faced by members in the society.
“We sincerely appreciate the effort of the state government for prioritising education and providing free education in the state.

“Government however needs to employ special needs teachers in public schools to give us a sense of belonging.”
She said the government needs to also provide materials like recorders and white cane for blind learners, sign language interpreters for deaf learners as well as slate stylus and wheelchairs.
She further urged parents and guardians to ensure they enroll their children with special needs in school, adding that such children have rights to education to make their contributions to the development of state and country at large.
